Excavation and land clearing across Marlboro County, SC.

Marlboro County sits in the upper Pee Dee region of South Carolina, north of Darlington and west of Dillon, with Bennettsville as the county seat. The 2020 population was about 26,667, making it one of the smallest counties in our service area by population. Marlboro is also home to the Pee Dee Indian Tribe — a small, state-recognized American Indian tribe whose ancestors have occupied the broader Pee Dee region for centuries and whose presence gave the region its name. The tribe’s official seat of government has operated on land in Marlboro County since 1976.

Why Ward works in Marlboro County

Bennettsville is the political and commercial center of Marlboro County and sits roughly in the geographic middle of a broad agricultural plain that runs across most of the county. Unlike Florence and Darlington further south, Marlboro is not centered on the main Pee Dee River — the river forms parts of the eastern boundary with Dillon County but does not run through the heart of the county. That distance from the river means Marlboro’s working landscape is dominated by upland farmland rather than by floodplain or river bottom. Cotton, corn, soybeans, and timber tracts make up most of what you see when you drive across the county on US-15 or SC-9.

The Pee Dee Indian Tribe, recognized by the state of South Carolina around the early 2000s and seeking federal acknowledgment since 1976, has its seat of government on land in Marlboro County. The tribe’s historical territory covered most of what is now the upper Pee Dee region, and the river system that defines four counties in our coverage area takes its name from them. The tribal land in Marlboro is not a large reservation in the way that federally-recognized tribal lands in other states sometimes are, but it is a real and continuous Indigenous presence in the county, and any property near tribal land has a layer of historical and cultural context that we know to ask about during the site visit.

The western edge of Marlboro County climbs toward the Sandhills region of central South Carolina, with the soil profile shifting from coastal plain loam in the east toward sandier, hillier terrain on the western side. Most of the county is well-drained upland — different from Marion County to the south, where the Little Pee Dee River dominates everything, and different from Darlington further south, where the prior industrial and mill economy has left its physical traces on the ground. Marlboro is a working agricultural county without the I-95 corridor that shapes Dillon’s economy or the freight-hub character that shapes Florence’s.

The kind of work we get called for in Marlboro County reflects its character as an agricultural-anchor county with one real population center. Most of the work is on rural property — farm pond construction, drainage rebuilds, field clearing for replanting or for new outbuildings, driveway work on older country roads. Bennettsville itself sees the more residential and small-commercial work that any county seat generates. The drive from Whiteville is about an hour and a half through the back roads via Tabor City and Clio, and Marlboro pairs naturally with our Dillon County and Darlington County routes when we have multiple stops in the area.
